Clacky Bristol UNITED KINGDOM Created Thu 27th Oct '16 15:41 (GMT)"Brown" vinyl Can I just say that your "brown"vinyl is in correct. This was a regular occurrence during the 1970's. It's where the record pressing plant have used lesser quality vinyl to make the record. It happened a lot with records on Pye - and affiliated labels and usually the 99p albums you could buy in Woolworths, etc. Because of the fuel crisis companies used to use rubbish supply of vinyl or re-ground material which when held up to the light looked 'brown/red'. This album was never issued on brown vinyl. Especially in 1974 as they weren't even doing coloured vinyl editions in this part of the 70's. That happened about 4 years later. Thanks[reply to this topic ]

vinylboy62 Redruth, Cornwall UNITED KINGDOM Created Sat 11th Oct '14 15:08 (GMT) Edited Sat 11th Oct '14 15:26 (GMT)Question to EIL: Hi I have Elton Johns Goodbye Yellow Brick Road on the DJM black and yellow labels 1973 LP. The interesting part is the black & yellow DJM label is stated made in the United States and not the uk and it's not on the normal black usa rainbow MCA label, but for some reason the DJM label does have the scratched MCA matrix numbers including the "[]-G-[]" the emblem for pressings at MCA's Gloversville, New York plant pressed in the deadwax on one side of one label only, all the rest are scratched out. I have searched and trawled the internet, but for life I can't find any more of this pressing. Matrix details Record one) side 1: MCA 354 - w2, side 2: MCA 355 - w2. Record two) side 3: MCA 356 - w1, side 4: MCA 357 - w1 Regards Ernest[reply to this topic ]
geoffpiano Waldshut, BW GERMANY Created Fri 23rd Aug '13 12:23 (GMT) Edited Fri 23rd Aug '13 12:26 (GMT)Rare Australian B-sides album I have in my collection an Elton John release from Rocket Records/Polygram Australia, entitled "The Other Sides - Special Collectors' Edition". I bought this vinyl LP brand new in 1982 and have never actually played it. It comprises 12 B-sides from Elton's single releases between 1978 and 1982. I have scoured the internet for other copies of this or even documentation of its existence, and can find nothing at all. The disc is in excellent/as new condition and the sleeve has a few marks but nothing serious. I have no idea what this is worth. Any offers or suggestions?[reply to this topic ]

tottrhys UNITED KINGDOM Created Thu 16th Feb '12 09:18 (GMT)Elton John - Rock of the Westies Coming hard on the heels of the Captain Fantastic album this album proved to be quite a change of sound at the time. Elton expanded his band changing his drummer and bassist and adding Ray Cooper on percussion and, most significantly, James Newton Howard on keyboards. Newton Howard proved to be a musical wizard who formed a long partnership with Elton and defined his new sound. This new musical alchemy proved to inspire Elton and Westies proved to be a platform for his musically sublime Blue Moves the following year. The album is a bit rough and ready in places but is full of excitement. The hits from it pretty much define the style so if you like Grow some funk and Island Girl you've pretty much got the taste and it remains pretty upbeat throughout. The irony is that one of Elton's best ever ballads is on this album - Feel like Bullet (in the gun of Robert Ford) - and it has been sadly overlooked through the years because it is on such an uptempo album. Westies is a must for Elton fans as it demonstrates his musical growth and progression and starts to distance him from the Crocodile Rock years. I have the Japanese CD edition with replica sleeve - basically the 2005 remaster but well worth the money.[reply to this topic ]

tottrhys UNITED KINGDOM Created Mon 8th Nov '10 18:53 (GMT) Edited Mon 8th Nov '10 18:53 (GMT)Review: Probabaly Elton's must underrated album and yet arguably his best. Eclipsed a little by the earlier Tumbleweed album, Madman is similar in feel but a touch more expansive and cinematic. Time has given us a chance to reappraise this work and certainly this Japanese edition of the CD shows it at its best. The packaging is fantastic and as I own the original vinyl edition I can tell you it is an excellent mini-replica. The sound of this 20-bit remastered edition also shows Gus Dudgeon's production at its best too. The original vinyl album sound was a little muted unless you managed to get an audiophile copy and the original CD mastering was pretty limp too but there's an added detail and depth to the sound here which is both illuminating and surprisingly soft and 'vinyl' like. Whilst it clearly can't match contemporary sound this is the best I've ever heard it and if you haven't got a copy of this Elton masterpiece you'd be a madman yourself not to snap up this limited edition.[reply to this topic ]

The 7" single I have has the large cut-out centre with the RR logo at the top. No white label, so I am guessing it's not the withdrawn single. If you want any photos contact me at westboundgreyhound@googlemail.com I am always intrested in trade of any items, especially radio interviews, of which I have some but want to expand. Thanks again, Simon.[reply to this topic ]
