John and Yoko’s first album venture was into the realms of the avant-garde with this mysterious home made album of sound effects, tape loops, free-form vocals and snatches of slowed down or speeded up music. It was recorded in May 1968 (probably the 19th/20th) between midnight and dawn, when John had invited Yoko to his home in Weybridge.
John had been experimenting with various recordings of his own for some time in his attic music room, Yoko was naturally interested in his way-out sound collages and so they decided to record something together. Their distant 18-month relationship was finally consummated after John audibly declared at the end of the tape “I’ve had enough now”. The naked cover photographs for the album were later taken in the basement of Ringo's flat in Montague Square, London, with John using a delayed action shutter release as he was too embarrassed to allow a professional to take the nude pictures.
It took six months for John to persuade the other band members to allow him to release the album. When released it did not enter the UK chart selling a mere 5000 copies in total before being deleted by EMI !
Condition
The Apple labels are in stunning mint condition with 'Sold In The UK Subject to...' label text. There are no spindle marks around the centre hole, as it is quite possible this copy has remained unplayed for the last 41 years!
The Track Records logo is on the right hand side of the label with the catalogue number 613012 below it, the SAPCOR2 number is smaller below the Track number.
The matrix numbers are machine stamped, they are as follows
Side One : SAPCOR 2A-1 Side Two : SAPCOR 2B-1
The vinyl remains in superb MINT condition & is still in the original black Apple die cut inner.
The fully laminated picture sleeve was very shocking in 1968 as it showed the couple naked on the front of the sleeve. Many shops refused to stock it and in the US it was issued with a brown paper bag to hide the nudity. With 'Made In Merrie England' text on the back.
The sleeve, being predominantly white, is prone to discolouration. The discolouration to this sleeve is minimal although it is vaguely apparent along the bottom edge on the front of the sleeve. There is slight laminate lift/bubbling on one section on the left hand side of the sleeve, a natural consequence of age, but even with these minor flaws we can confirm that this is the best copy of this rarity we've ever seen and you would be unlikely to find a better copy!
This copy was the personal copy of Vic Lewis who orchestrated the Beatles first US visit in 1964 and in 1965 was appointed to the NEMS board of Directors and became one of Epstein's key men after Brian Epstein bought out his booking agency. Upon his Epstein's death in 1967 Vic Lewis took over a more active role in NEMS until the creation of Apple.
